Flixbus from Munich to Paris
In July 2024 I took an overnight Flixbus from Munich to Paris, and since I can’t sleep when travelling, I decided I’d try to take some photos. I liked the way the silhouettes from the bus framed the scenes outside. Looking back I thought the photos captured the atmosphere well, but I also thought that everything in them looked fake. Like bad cgi from a film. They’re weird photos. Imperfectly composed, thematically messy, and weird; but I still like them.
When I was in high school I did this photoshoot where the idea was to shoot through a
windscreen on a rainy day. It was basically stolen from the photographer Todd Hido, and it
came out really nicely. That shoot was much more premeditated than this one - plans and
moodboards, set locations, all part of a wider project. But I think it was essentially the same
instinct as this: to provide some interesting framing for whatever the content is. In these
shoots the balancing act is always going to be between the content and the framing. I think
the balance here isn’t awful, but perhaps leans too far towards the frame - which makes sense
since I didn’t have much control over the content. The seventh photo is definitely the most
egregious offender in this regard. Its included because I love the little spotlight which seems to
have appeared around the bin. Anyway the balance is something to keep in mind for next time.
These photos are also untouched by any kind of editing software, which is probably to their
detriment. If I get time I might try to give them a once over to give them a more coherent feel.
